Migration of any sort is a big deal. However, when it comes to your company email database, ensuring a seamless transition is a must. Whether you take a stab at a little DIY or hire a professional, an Office 365 migration of email doesn’t have to be a painful and frustrating task.
Even more, your employees can import their own email, contacts, and other information to the Microsoft 365 account you create for them. However, before you jump into any type of migration, it’s always important to review all aspects and limits to ensure a seamless transition.
Office 365 migration from an Exchange Server.
In the instance of a migration from an on-premise Exchange Server environment, administrators will generally take over the task. Moving email, calendar, and contacts depend on a few variables. Here is a brief overview of three types of email migrations.
- All at once migration
If you have fewer than 2,000 mailboxes and are migrating from Exchange 2003, 2007, 2010, or 2013, this may be the best solution.
- Batched migration
This type of migration is intended for current users of Exchange 2003 or 2007 with more than 2,000 mailbox accounts.
- Migration with an integrated Exchange Server
This gradual migration maintains on-premise and online mailboxes and is best if:
- You have between 150 and 2,000 mailboxes
- You have Exchange 2010 or 2013 and want to migrate in batches
Migration from another IMAP-enabled system
Internet Message Access Protocol (IMAP) can be used to migrate emails from Exchange, Gmail, Outlook, along with other email systems that support IMAP. However, when using this method, it’s important to note that only items in folders will carry over. Other things like contacts and calendars are not supported.
